CoCo: My beloved Co-Working Space in Kakkanad, Kerala
DE (scroll for ENG ⬇️ )

It’s now almost a year since I returned from my second field research trip to Kerala. There is one place I miss dearly: my co-working space CoCo in Kakkanad, located in an industrial park bordering Kochi/Ernakulam. My lovely apartment was just a ten-minute walk away.
I discovered this place on the first evening after my arrival, when I took a walk and, lost in thought, made a few unintentional turns. The sun had already set. It was still quite hot, and I was exhausted from the jet lag and my journey. During the walk, I brooded over where and how I would work for the next few months. My godmother’s apartment, though nicely located, was not air-conditioned. The street noise didn’t exactly make it an ideal place for focused work. Yet, I had a lot of work ahead of me: writing and tons of interview transcriptions. I was startled when a honking rickshaw suddenly pulled me out of my thoughts. There I stood on the street, feeling lost, wondering where I was and how to get home. In front of me was a modern long building with large, brightly lit letters: COCO COLLECTIVE COWORKS. Unfortunately, it was too late and CoCo was already closed, but the next day I went straight there to inquire. It turned out that CoCo was the first co-working space in the Ernakulam/Kochi region and had just opened a few months earlier.
CoCo was a dream place to work on my dissertation: internet, air conditioning (with over 40°C outside temperature), quietness, flexibility, and many friendly and exciting people - this place was truly special! There was also an excellent Chaiwallah next door and an espresso machine at the reception. In the back, there was a sofa for a quick nap. At the reception, there was a small auditorium for events. Across the street, a simple restaurant offered basic curries and fresh juices at an affordable price. Delicious Punjabi cuisine at Harrsh Dhaba and fresh coconuts around the corner. The beautiful city of Kochi was only about an hour’s bus ride away.
Due to my research and interviews, I was on the road a lot, but Anandu and Midhun accommodated me with a fair and flexible offer for a workspace. In the end I worked at CoCo almost every day when I wasn’t traveling. The crew connected me with fascinating people. Smrithy, a wonderfully well-networked community manager, got me music contacts within a few days. One day, Midhun unexpectedly dialed the number of his aunt, who had worked as a nurse in Germany in the 70s. Yes, the world can be very small sometimes.
The other users of CoCo, the so-called Cocoites, welcomed me with open arms. I fondly remember the fun rounds of Carrom during my short breaks or lunch at the Dhaba (simple restaurants) around the corner with great people who introduced me to their topics: from drone programming in start-ups to questions about Islamic theology. CoCo - the place and the people made my work there so much more pleasant and enjoyable. Often, I was the last one there, wishing the night security guard a good night. Btw. A captured moment between Midhun and me made it onto the logo:
