Impressions: Presentation at the International Conference "South Asian Migration and the Conditions of Precarity", Rostock University, June 27-28, 2025

Da lagen einige Steine auf dem Weg zur Konferenz, aber irgendwie führten auch Pfade an den Steinen vorbei. Am Mittwoch spielte ich noch ein Konzert mit Django Vagabonds in Heidelberg, am Donnerstag ging es dann gemeinsam im Trio mit dem Wohnmobil in Richtung Berlin - ungewöhnlicherweise auf der Straße von Heidelberg in die Hauptstadt. Ein großes Glück, denn wie sich rausstellte, wurde genau an diesem Tag der Heidelberger Bahnhof wegen eines technischen Defekts nicht angefahren. 

Am frühen Abend in Berlin angekommen, verabschiedete ich mich von der Band und stieg in den ICE nach Rostock. Die Fahrt werde ich so schnell nicht vergessen. 20 Minuten nach Abfahrt aus dem Berlin Hauptbahnhof kamen wir in ein massives Unwetter. Blitze schlugen krached neben dem Zug ein. Draußen war kaum etwas zu erkennen – und das wenige erschien durch die strömenden Wassermassen wie in einem Gemälde von Van Gogh. Später stellte sich heraus, dass das Unwetter kurz darauf Berlin erreichte und dort erhebliche Schäden anrichtete. Der Niederschlag konnte nicht schnell genug abfließen und so wurden S- und U-Bahn Stationen geschlossen. Die Bahn stellte den Zugverkehr ein. Einige Konferenzteilnehmende aus Indien blieben so erstmal in Berlin gezwunngener Maßen hängen. Ich kam hingegen wohlbehalten in Rostock an, wo die nächsten zwei Tage die Internatioale Konferenz "South Asian Migration and the Conditions of Precarity" an der Univsersität Rostock stattfinden sollte.

Die Konferenz war eine tolle Erfahrung, bei der ich nicht nur mein Thema in Bezug auf einer Wechselwirkungen verschiedener Präkaritätskontexte ( Kerala der 1960er und die kritische Situation der Nirmala-Angehörigen in Südwestdeutschland) präsentieren konnte, sondern auch internationale Kollegen kennenlernte. Was für eine großartige Möglichkeiten südasisatische Aspekte des Themas mit KollegInnen aus Indien zu diskutieren, Freundschaften zu schließen und dazu das wunderschöne Rostock zu erleben. Dazu wurde die Konferenz nicht nur von der Chandigarh University Indien, sondern auch noch von der Aarhus University ausgerichtet, an der ich selbst ein Semester Südasienstudien studieren durfte. Einem Kollegen von dort gab ich eine Ausgabe von Fachkräftemigration - Pflegenotstand - Nächstenliebe für die dortige Universitätsbibliothek mit: In Dankbarkeit für meine "Teilzeit" Erasmus alma mater in Dänemark. 

Vielen Dank an alle Organisierenden und Mitwirkenden der Konferenz in Rostock, die diesen lebendigen Raum geöffnet und mitgestaltet haben!

There were quite a few obstacles on the way to the conference, but somehow, there were always paths that led around the stones. On Wednesday, I was still performing a concert with Django Vagabonds in Heidelberg, and on Thursday morning, we set off together in the camper van toward Berlin – unusually, by road from Heidelberg to Berlin. In hindsight, it was a stroke of luck, because as it turned out, the Heidelberg train station was not in service that very day due to a technical fault.

Arriving in Berlin in the early evening, I said goodbye to the band and boarded the ICE train to Rostock. It’s a journey I won’t forget anytime soon. About 20 minutes after departing from Berlin Central Station, we ran into a massive thunderstorm. Lightning struck with a deafening crack right next to the train. Outside, there was little to see – and what was visible appeared through the streaming rain like a Van Gogh painting. Later, it became clear that the storm had soon reached Berlin, causing significant damage. The heavy rainfall couldn’t drain fast enough, and several S-Bahn and U-Bahn stations had to be closed. Rail services were suspended. Some conference participants from India were unfortunately stranded in Berlin for the time being.

I, on the other hand, arrived safely in Rostock, where the international conference “South Asian Migration and the Conditions of Precarity” was to take place at the Rostock University over the next two days.

The conference was a fantastic experience. I had the opportunity not only to present my research on the interaction of different contexts of precarity (Kerala in the 1960s and the critical situation of the Nirmala community in southwestern Germany), but also to meet international colleagues. What a wonderful opportunity to discuss South Asian aspects of the topic with fellow scholars from India, to build friendships, and to experience the beauty of Rostock!

Adding to this special experience was the fact that the conference was also presented by the Chandigarh Universiy and the Aarhus University – the very place where I had once studied South Asian Studies. I even gave a colleague from Aarhus a copy of my book Fachkräftemigration – Pflegenotstand – Nächstenliebe for the university library there, in gratitude to my Erasmus 'part time' alma mater in Denmark.
